Juicing has been popular in hippie and natural communities for decades, but only recently hit the mainstream and the average kitchen. A driving force behind the current juicing movement is the documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, the telling of Joe Cross’ story of road tripping across America with a generator and makeshift juicing kitchen in his station wagon’s trunk.
Fat Sick and Nearly Dead brought national attention to the juicing movement, and specifically Joe’s chosen juicer – the Breville Juice Fountain Plus. Suffering from a rare autoimmune disease that modern medicine could not cure, he chose to learn how average Americans view and eat food while only consuming fresh and raw fruits and vegetables juiced from his Breville.
Flooding his body with nutrients not only diminished the side effects and symptoms of Cross’ autoimmune disease, but he lost completely reshaped his body with weight loss and regained agility and strength.
Adding juicing to your diet can require a significant time commitment. Consider a centrifugal juicer, such as the Breville Juice Fountain Plus, if you are new to juicing. Centrifugal juicers are considerably faster than masticating juicers. You will trade a bit more noise and oxidation on all models, but this is a fair trade-off in the long run as many people do not stick to juicing when it takes too much time. Below is our review for the centrifugal juicer Breville Juice Fountain Plus.
BREVILLE JUICE FOUNTAIN PLUS
High or Low Speed Options
As its full name suggests, the Breville Two-Speed Juice Fountain Plus does indeed have a simple High and Low options. For dense or hard fruits or vegetables, use the 12,000 RPM High speed. To preserve the most juice for simple and easy foods like bananas and pre-cut kiwi, you can use the 6,500 RPM Slow speed.
Most fruits and vegetables will comfortably fit in the three-inch feeding tube. To save yourself time, be mindful of produce size while shopping and choose the thinner produce. If you are choosing the smaller produce, almost all of your ingredients will be able to be fed wholly into the juicer.
The Breville Juice Fountain Plus completely dissembles to make it easy to clean. Throw away the food discards and use the included cleaning brush to properly clean the mesh filter basket in the sink. All of the other parts can be placed in the dishwasher.
The manufacturer has a limited one-year warranty. Breville is known for their good customer service and living up to their warranties. This is a big plus for appliances with parts that can become misaligned.
The Breville Juice Fountain Plus is a bit bigger than other beginner domestic juicers. It is made for those who are ready to take on daily juicing and give permanent counter space to the machine. About the size of a KitchenAid standing mixer, it is well designed to maintain its size. Reassemble and coil the cord into its notch so it doesn’t take up too much space during the day.
It can handle most juice recipes. Add an entire carrot, several full uncut apples, a beet, and half lemon for a nutritious and quick juice. You can make enough for your morning juice and afternoon snack in one round. Just remember to shake your juice before you drink it later in the day.
The feed tube allows you to quickly get through the ingredients. If you have fed too much, the juicer will automatically turn off the motor to prevent more juicing until all of the liquid has drained. The included pitcher is large, but it is helpful to keep an extra pitcher or glass nearby in case more juice is made than intended.
Cold-pressed juices have the strongest and freshest flavors, but are incredibly difficult to make. The required labor needed to make them is a major factor in store bought cold-pressed juices. The homemade juices from Breville’s come in at a close second. The motor is quick but doesn’t overheat to preserve the juices’ flavors and reduce any unintended “cooking” of ingredients.
All Green Juices
As a beginner juicer, the Breville Juice Fountain Plus cannot handle wheatgrass or large amounts of green leafy vegetables. A pure green juice comes out as almost just foam. It really is best for juice blend recipes so one part of the machine is not overworked.
Amount of Juice
The juicer is not large enough to make a full day of juices if you are on a cleanse. You will need to break it down after a few glasses to clean the mesh and empty the food discards.
The Breville Juice Fountain Plus is loud compared to high-end juicers and sounds like an appliance with a motor. If you are sensitive to loud appliances, this may not be the right juicer for you. Yet, it is comparatively no louder than other options in its category and price range.
WHEN THIS IS YOUR JUICER
If you are inspired by Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and ready to take the first step to getting to know juicing, the Breville Juice Fountain Plus is for you. The many pieces of the machine wipe down easily and quickly becomes a part of your morning and snack routine.
Keep the plastic bags your fruits and vegetables come in from the grocery store. They are the perfect size for this juicer and make clean-up much easier. Using a liner in the machine’s discard basket makes all the difference. The discarded food parts will be very dense and hard to get out without a lining. The other parts of the machine can easily be rinsed with a cloth or the included cleaning brush.
WHEN TO CONSIDER ANOTHER JUICER
As a centrifugal juicer, it is a loud appliance. If you live in an apartment building or live with other people, you will not be able to juice during quiet hours. Long time juicers will want a more advanced juicer that can fully handle fibrous vegetables like ginger and get the most out of leafy greens like kale.
As the affordable version of the Breville Juice Fountain Elite, this juicer has all of the power and functions needed for the beginner juicer at home. It can make juices quickly and easily while getting most of the nutrients out of the fruits and vegetables you put into it.
Our favorite feature is being able to put full apples into it. Apples are the most constant ingredient in diet and nutrition plans for a good reason, they are excellent metabolism boosting and hydrating your body’s system. They also happen to be the most versatile base for any juice recipe. Eliminating the need to cut apples in your recipe balances out the machine cleaning time in our book.
